Description

I made Beltza Bear Wine Cups on the potter’s wheel using a tan stoneware clay.  Deliciously shaped to fit in the hand with impressions or dimples in either side of the cups for a comfy, natural grasp.

I use a leather strip to roll the lip of clay from the interior to the exterior plane after I throw each cup.  Liquid flows smoothly over the rim because this “line” directs the flow of liquid.

After each cup is trimmed and dry, they go through the first firing, called bisque.  Next the interior of each cup is lined with gold, red gold.  And then the exterior is dipped in a satin black glaze, to about 3/4 of the way up.  The remaining 1/4 of the cup gets a dip in the red gold.  For the final touch,  a dip in copper green but just on the rim.  Each cup is a unique reflection of colors, some with more green and some with a bluish flash!

Then the cups are fired to 2200 degrees. Black fires out satin smooth.  Red gold modulates in green, gold, red, and even some blue gray tones, but just at the rims.

Fill with holiday cheer!  Mulled wine, cider, egg nog, or cocoa anyone?  Great for serving wine on any occasion.  I use cups like these for coffee with no problem.  Heating in the microwave is safe, simply allow the cup to cool before handling.

Beltza Bear Wine Cups are sold in pairs. (Beltza is the Basque word for “Black”).

They make a great gift for couples, roomies, partners, sisters, bros, or split them up and you have two gifts!  Also, great gifts for wedding, holidays, housewarming, birthday, or just to say “thank you”.
