I made Big Midnight Bloom Mug on the potter’s wheel with stoneware clay. The bottom is flat and the handle roomy enough for bigger hands! I pull the handle directly from the mug giving it a natural look and feel. A thumb stop is added for additional comfort.
The “Midnight Bloom” glaze is a technique where I first dip the entire mug into a floating blue glaze that I make. When this glaze is applied moderately thin, it pulls to a deep blue, like midnight. Next I dip the rim of the cup in a red gold glaze and I also trail this red gold over the cup and inside the cup. This will make the lines in the heavens, so to speak. The last step is to daub red gold around the surface to create blooms. The blooms fire out bright blue with gold edges and remind of a midnight sky in Northern New Mexico.
Big Midnight Bloom Mug: one is 5″H x 3″ diameter and one is 5.5” H x 3″ diameter. Well-balanced and light weight.
