I made Joshua Tree Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable – not too thin not too thick. The bottom is flat.
Joshua Tree Barrel Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold. Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth.
Starting with a red iron wash, rubbed into the exterior of the mug, I dip 2/3 of the mug in a red gold glaze that, to me, evokes feelings of a desert landscape. Next I overlap the red gold glaze at the upper portion of the mug with a green glaze that I make. Results in a sheeting of sorts. The red gold is matte and soft to the touch. The red iron wash is a bit more coarse. The overall feel is comfortable, like a worn, western blanket.
Makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or “thank you” gift.
All of my mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
