I made JT Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable – not too thin not too thick – and slightly looped for a comfortable hold. It’s a full form that sits stable on the table and feels smooth and balanced in the hand.
JT Barrel Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold. Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth. The shape is pleasing to the eye and comfortably balanced in the hand.
I call this surface design JT in reference to the Joshua Tree. After the mug has been bisque fired to about 1800 degrees, I rub 3/4 of the body with a red iron oxide. This will fire into the clay body as a rich red brown, smooth to the touch. The upper portion of the mug, as well as the interior, I dip into with a red gold glaze. Lastly, I overlap the red gold with a copper green. The green will flow into the red gold and produces a beautiful feathering of green, red browns, and gold.
All my pottery is fired to at least 2200 degrees F and is dishwasher and oven safe. Mugs are microwave safe as well.
Makes a great gift for any occasion: Housewarming, birthday, holiday, “thank you”.
