Description

I built JT Butter Keeper by hand with an iron bearing stoneware clay and start by making a single template.  Then I design the template for either sizes of butter sticks – long and narrow and short and fat.  Now I can cut several butter keepers from a single slab of clay, rolled to between 1/8″ and 1/4″ thick.   Next I cut the form from clay rolled to an even thickness with a slab roller and then construct it.

The handle is made from a rolled and textured strip of clay that I fashion into a knot and attach to the lid.  Each butter keeper has a unique handle.

I call the glaze “JT”, short for Joshua Tree, in homage to the national park where the color palette is earthy and natural.  After I bisque-fire the butter dish, I rub an iron oxide into the entire piece, which will fire deep red brown in the kiln and is permanent.  Next I pour, daub, and drizzle blue, green, cream, and gold glazes, in modest amounts.  Each butter keeper is slightly different in terms of how these glazes converge.  I have a rhythm of dipping and pouring the glazes that give each piece their own musicality!

Keep JT Butter Keeper on your counter to ensure your butter stays soft while being protected.  Or store in the fridge.  And it’s decorative and will add to the beauty of your kitchen or table.  Also makes a great gift for wedding, anniversary, or just about any occasion.  Sturdy and durable.
