Description
I made Mama Bear Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay. It has a fully formed round shape that tapers to the rim and a flat foot. I pull the handle directly from the body of the mug, giving it a natural extension from the cup. And I add a small bead of clay as a thumb stop or rest.
After the mug was fired to bisque, or 1800 degrees F, I dip the entire outside of the cup in a purple matte glaze that I make. Next, I dip the exterior in a black satin glaze, leaving maybe a 1/4″ at the top. Next I dip that 1/4″ or so at the top in the red gold, followed by a sliver dip of copper green. The result is black satin magic. Each time slightly different colors revealed in the firing. The texture is smooth as satin.
I glaze fire all my pottery to at least 2200 degrees F, so all my mugs are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe.
Mama Bear Mug makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or thank you gift. The barrel shape helps to keep beverages hot or cold longer. Smooth to the touch and well-balanced.
