I made Midnight Bloom Medium Bowl on the potter’s wheel with stoneware clay, which is tan in color, and then trimmed a foot to lift the bowl and add elegance to the form. After the bowl dried, I fired it in my electric kiln to 1800 degrees F. This is the first fire that prepares the bowl for glazing.
What I call “Midnight Bloom” is the result of dipping the 1/2 the bowl in a floating blue glaze that I make. When the first half is dry, I dip the other half. A single layer of the floating blue glaze produces a dark, Navy blue. Where the two halves overlap, the glaze is thicker and also brighter. Next I use a sash brush to daub blotches of gold glaze over the inside and outside of the bowl. For the final touch, I quickly trail gold glaze in diagonal lines over the surfaces of the bowl. The gold lights up the navy blue like stars in the night.
Midnight Bloom Medium Bowl is great for serving salad, potatoes, rice, pasta, or any of your favorite sides to the table. Light weight and well-balanced. Use for any occasion.
