Description

I made Black Bear Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay.  The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity.  I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort.  The handle is comfortable – not too thin not too thick.  Flat bottom with a gentle curve and slightly flared rim.

Black Bear Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold.  Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth.

I call this glaze application “Black Bear”.  Starting with a satin black glaze, I dip the mug from the bottom and leave the top 1/4 of the cup bare.  Next I dip the mug from the top in a red gold glaze, overlapping the black glaze slightly.  Also, I line the mug with in the same red gold glaze.  Finally, I dip just the rim in a copper green glaze that I make.  When the cup is fired to 2200 degrees, the overlapping glazes “sheet” and some feathery “fur” and freckles are revealed.

Makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or “thank you” gift.

The shape delivers your favorite beverage smoothly across the rim and the tapered rim closes the form slightly, helping to hold the heat or the cold longer.

All of my mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
