I made Purple Sunset Jar on the potter’s wheel from stoneware clay. It’s a classic cookie jar shape, round and open at the mouth so any cookie monster’s paw can fit inside, with a slight elevated foot. I threw the lid separately and it seats in a galley with a flange that sits inside the pot to keep it secure. A knotted finial completes the piece.
My Purple Sunset glaze is a three-part glaze application that often results in a sunset feeling. I start with a dunk in the purple matte glaze that I make, say 3/4 of the way up the pot. Next, I dip from the top into a red gold glaze. And for the final touch, I dip again from the top in a green glaze I make; overlapping the red gold maybe halfway. For Purple Sunset Jar, I daubed red gold in a light pattern over the purple matte areas creating shadowy blooms. The surface gives a contemporary treatment of a classic form.
Use as a cookie jar or as a canister to store dry goods or as a stand alone decorative piece. Fill with your favorite short-stem flowers.
