Description

I made Taos 16 oz Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay.  With a wider, shorter profile than my other cylindrical mugs.  Beaded rim and flat bottom with a handle I pull directly from the body of the mug, giving it a natural extension from the cup.  And a small bead of clay as a thumb stop or rest.

After the mug is fired to bisque, or roughly 1800 degrees F, I dip the part of the cup in a floating blue glaze that I make.  Next, I dip the lower portion of the cup in a copper green glaze that I make.  Then, I splash a bit of homemade cream rust glaze across the surface.  And lastly, I add red gold to the rim, and daub the surface to create “blooms”.  This 4-part glaze technique is something I developed over time and call “Taos” because it reminds me of the natural environment of Northern New Mexico.  Mountains/juniper/sage + impossibly blue skies, dotted with fascinating clouds, and dripping in sunshine.

I glaze fire all my pottery to at least 2200 degrees F, so all my mugs are microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe.

Taos 16 oz Mug makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or thank you gift.  Helps to keep beverages hot or cold longer.  Holds a lot for a lower profile cup.  Smooth to the touch and well-balanced.
