Description

I made Tree House Lantern on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing clay.  First I thrown a conical form, then I alter the form with my finger from the inside quite a bit.  Stamping a clay slab with a batik block printer creates texture for the layered roof.  A meat tenderizing hammer for the final texture!

After completing construction of Tree House Lantern, I cut a door that accommodates votive candles. Now it’s ready to pierce.  At this point, I have a good feel for the lantern’s unique personality.  I don’t use a stencil for piercing.  I use intuition, varying the holes to make interesting light patterns.

After I bisque fired the lantern, the piece is then wood fired for about 34 hours to 2400 degrees F or hotter.  This particular fairy house sat on the floor of the kiln in between the two stacks, where we sometimes side stoke.  The heavy reduction late in the firing created deep rich earth tones in the clay body.

Use it inside on a table, side board, beside the tub.  Use the lantern outside as well, in a flower bed, or on the hot tub, or on a patio table.
