I made Wood Fired Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is an iron bearing stoneware that reduces to deep, rich brown in the wood kiln. A barrel form helps hold in the heat of your coffee or tea and is a comfort to hold and liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth.. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable – not too thin not too thick. The bottom is flat. The lip round and smooth.
Wood Fired Barrel Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold.
I dipped the upper portion of the mug in a Yellow Salt glaze which I make and fired the mug in my wood burning kiln for about 34 hours. The glaze fires to a lovely mottled, smooth, matte finish; and the dark brown “naked” portion of the mug is like smooth rock. The overall feel is comfortable, subtle, and pleasing.
Makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or “thank you” gift.
Fired to 2400 degrees F using wood as the fuel, this mug is microwave and dishwasher safe.
