Description
I made Floating Blue Barrel on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay. A fully expressed barrel here, that rolls from inside to out, forming a smooth transition line for liquid. Fat foot. I pull the handle directly from the body of the mug, giving it a natural extension from the cup. And I add a small bead of clay as a thumb stop or rest.
After the mug is fired to bisque, or 1800 degrees F, I prep the mug for glazing and then dip the cup in a floating blue glaze that I make. I dipped 3/4 of the way up and then 1/4 of the cup down, making a slight overlap. Some interesting results where the glaze layers overlap. Moonlight.
I fired the mug a second time to 2200 degrees in oxidation. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe.
Serve up a hefty mug of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Or use for cold beverages. Stoneware pottery helps to keep your beverage hot or cold longer.
Floating Blue Barrel makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or thank you gift. Or start your mug collection with this easy favorite. Medium weight. Well balanced.
