Description
Like all my mugs, I made JT Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from stoneware clay and pulled the handle directly from the pot. Thumb rest added for comfort. I give the handle plenty of space for all sizes of hands.
After each mug has been trimmed, handled, and dried, I fire them to “bisque”. Then I prep and glaze each mug. I start with a dip into the red gold glaze bucket, head first. I tend to leave 1/4″ or so at the bottom because the red gold glaze likes to move sometimes! Next I line each mug with a copper green glaze that I make. And for the final touch I dip the top 1/4 of the mug in the same copper green glaze. The green glaze ‘bleeds’ into the red gold, creating added interest.
I call this glaze prep JT or Joshua Tree, an ode to Joshua Tree National Park: Its red gold matte glaze a reference to the desert; the green overlapping glaze a nod to the Joshua Tree.
Use JT Barrel Mug for hot or cold beverages, fired stoneware holds temperature longer than those slip cast, mass-produced mugs. Makes a great gift for birthday, house warming, holidays and even to say “Thank You!”
I trimmed the bottom flat, no foot. Holds the temperature, so drink hot or cold beverages in your new mug.
I fire to 2200 degrees F so use your stoneware mug in the microwave or dishwasher.
