Description
I hand-built Long Boat during a 2-day workshop, using a deep red clay body. First, I rolled out a slab of the clay and then draped it over a Styrofoam mold. The hard part for me waiting for the form to stiffen enough to hold form. Heat gun and sunshine accelerate the process nicely! Before the form is inverted, I built a square foot. When I flipped it over, it required some supports at either end. And from there, it was coiling, smoothing, combing smoothing. The finishing continued after I got the piece back to my studio.
Once Long Boat had dried thoroughly, I bisque fired it. The next trick was figuring out the glazing. A sprayer would have done the trick but since I don’t have a spray set up, I used a rectangular bin. And it was perfect. First a coat of red gold, followed by a coat of copper green. Love the result.
Use as a centerpiece (looks great with RIO Candle Stalks). Fill with cropped flowers or spherical wooden forms. Makes a unique housewarming gift, wedding gift, special gift that will enhance any home decor. Hefty and beautifully hand crafted.
