Description

I made Taos Wine Cups on the potter’s wheel using a tan stoneware clay.  Deliciously shaped to fit in the hand with impressions or dimples in either side of the cups for a comfy, firm grasp.

I use a leather strip to roll the lip of clay from the interior to the exterior plane after I throw each cup.  Liquid flows smoothly over the rim because this “line” directs the flow of liquid.

After each cup is trimmed and dry, they go through the first firing, called bisque.  Next the exteriors of the cups are dipped from the top down about 3/4 of the way into a floating blue glaze I make.  And then the bottom 1/4 is dipped in a copper green glaze I make.  Each cups gets “trails” of cream glaze and also a red gold glaze.    The interiors are lined with blue as well.  Then the cups are fired to 2200 degrees. The melding of the 4 glazes produces a dynamic and vibrant surface.

Great for serving wine but use the cups as you like for hot or cold beverages.  Obviously with hot drinks you will want to be sure the cup is cooled enough to handle before picking it up.  I use cups like these for coffee with no problem.  Heating in the microwave is safe, but allow the cup to cool before handling.

Taos Wine Cups are sold in pairs.

They make a great gift for wedding, holidays, housewarming, birthday, or just to say “thank you”.
