Description
I made Verde Manhandle 20 oz Mug on the potter’s wheel using an iron bearing stoneware clay, which fires out tan. A pulled handle has plenty of room for most hand sizes and added a thumb stop for extra comfort. And it is a lot of mug. A classic straight up form, beaded rim, and flat bottom. But it’s not heavy!
After I bisque fire Verde Manhandle 20 oz mug, I prep the mug by waxing the bottom and the stamp design. Then, I dip opposite sides of the cup in a copper green glaze that I make. I usually do this straight up like the mug. Then I dip across the bare areas in a cream rust glaze I also make. The result is clean and contemporary. Sometimes the rust will break over the rim or emerge in areas where the glaze is a little thinner. And the areas where the two glazes overlap creates a third element, adding interest to the surface.
I fired this cup to 2200 degrees F, which makes it a strong stoneware ceramic. The handle won’t get hot in the microwave like those cheap, mass produced, slip cast cups! Stoneware heats evenly and help hold the heat longer. Once you’ve enjoyed a handmade stoneware mug you’ll never go back to commercially made mugs!
Enjoy your favorite beverage, hot or cold. The stoneware ceramic will help insulate the temperature. Add to your favorite mug collection or gift a partner, roommate, friend, or colleague. Makes a great thank you, housewarming, birthday, holiday, job appreciation, anytime gift!
