Description

I made Wood Fired Oval Vase on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay.  I started the form as a cylinder without a bottom.  Next I gently compressed the cylinder into a oval; and then attached a floor.  Sounds easy, right?  Well, it takes a bit of massaging to get the piece to line up without overworking it.  I find the process quite pleasing and the result satisfying.

Knowing this piece would go into the wood kiln, I chose to leave a good portion of the exterior bare.  The reduction of oxygen in the kiln results in a rich red/brown clay body that is vitrified; that is, water tight.   I dipped the upper quarter of Wood Fired Oval Vase in a red shino glaze that I make.  And also used the same glaze inside to line it.  And then finished off the design with energetic brushwork.

Cut your favorite crop of flowers to suit the height of the vase and spread them along the shape of the piece.  A run of Irises or daffodils would look stellar against the rustic tones.  Set off a shelf, table top, or nook with the poetic charm of this wood fired vase.

Makes the perfect wedding, anniversary, or house warming gift.  Treat yourself to this original and sculptural vase.
