Description

I made Blue Rain Pitcher on the potter’s wheel from stoneware clay and pulled a hearty handle directly from the plump pot, adding a thumb stop for comfort and leverage.  I form the spout from the neck, pointing the tip of the spout downward with a “break” across the curve so it pours smoothly, without dripping.  It has a fully expressed shape with a flat foot.  And it’s light weight and well-balance.

“Blue Rain” glaze is a glaze combination I developed through playful experimentation.  I start by dipping the outside of the piece in a purple matte glaze that I make, usually on a diagonal.  Next I dip the neck in a floating blue glaze that I make.  I also line the pitcher with the same blue glaze.  Lastly, I dip the neck about halfway with a red gold glaze.  The result is a sheeting, or rain, of colors which includes an ice blue.  Magical!  This melding went all the way to the bottom of the pot!

Blue Rain Pitcher was fired to 2200 degrees F serve up hot as well as cold beverages for a few friends or family!  Serve iced iced, water, how about Sangria or margaritas!  Stoneware pottery holds the temperature of its contents better than poured commercial slip ware.  It’s sturdy and easy to hold and to balance.

Use the pitcher for a flower vase as well and set it in the center of a table or on a sideboard or mantel.  Makes a superb wedding gift, housewarming gift, anniversary gift.
