Description
I made Celtic Cross Wood Fired Stein on the potter’s wheel from a rich iron-bearing stoneware clay and pulled the handle directly from the body of the cup into a natural shape for the hand to hold. A thumb stop adds interest and comfort. The form is classical middle earth stein, with a flat bottom. Well-balanced and light weight.
After the stein was bisque fired, I dipped it in a Red Shino glaze that I make. Red Shino pulls darker where it’s thinner and pulls toward a caramel or cream where thick. In this case, it’s a darker, old world surface. Ideal for Celtic Cross inspiration.
Enjoy your favorite beverage, hot or cold. The high fired stoneware ceramic will insulate the temperature of whatever your drinking. The inset between body and rim creates a natural place for your lip. A beaded rim helps to resist chipping. And I rolled the rim with a leather chamois to create a smooth transfer from stein to mouth.
