Description
I made Floating Blue 22 oz Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay. It has a classic cylindrical shape with a beaded rim and a flat foot. I pull the handle directly from the body of the mug, giving it a natural extension from the cup. And I add a small bead of clay as a thumb stop or rest. For some added surface interest, I used a tire balancing weight as a stamp.
After the mug is fired to bisque, or 1800 degrees F, I prep the mug for glazing and then dip the cup in a floating blue glaze that I make. I dipped halfway on a vertical line and then the other half, making a slight overlap. This gives a flash of lighter blue to add interest.
I fired the mug a second time to 2200 degrees in oxidation. It’s microwave and dishwasher safe.
Serve up a hefty mug of coffee, hot chocolate, or tea. Use as a stein. Stoneware pottery helps to keep your beverage hotter or cooler longer.
