Description
I made Hanging Mushroom Lantern on the potter’s wheel, using an iron bearing stoneware clay. A roof is thrown on the wheel and also attached.
And once the form is complete, I cut the door and pierce the body with an Exacto knife. I don’t use patterns. It’s all done intuitively. After piercing the lantern, I swabbed the roof with a flashing slip, in a circular motion, and then ran a small handmade broom tool through the slip to give it texture.
And after I bisque-fired Hanging Mushroom Lantern, it’s ready for the wood kiln! We fire to 2400 degrees fahrenheit, which is usually between 32-36 hours of continuous stoking and about 2 cords of wood. So the lantern is safe inside or outside. The clay is now high fired stoneware and is completely vitrified.
I’ve always called these one of a kind creations “lanterns” but you might think of them as fairy houses. Hang the lantern, or fairy house, from a hook in a tree. Set it on a patio table, along a spa, or on the deck.
You may also use the lantern inside to add ambiance to any table, niche, or tub area.
Wired door accommodates tealight or votive candles. When using a votive candle, I suggest you place a patch of wax paper underneath the candle to make removal easier.
Makes a unique wedding, housewarming, or anytime gift.
