I made Purple Sunset Medium Serving Bowl on the potter’s wheel from stoneware clay. The clay is a tan to light brown color.
I trimmed a raised foot and after the bowl was dry and fired it in my electric kiln. This is called the bisque fire and it makes the pottery permanently hardened but still porous enough to take on glaze. To read more about firing pottery click here.
Purple Sunset Medium Serving Bowl gets its surface beauty from a combination of 3 glazes, 2 of which I make myself. First I dip the back and the upper quarter of the bowl in a purple matte glaze. Then I pour red gold glaze in to fill the interior “pond” and overlap the purple on the rim. When this is fully dry, I dip just the rim in my green glaze. The melding of the overlap creates a depth of color that is like a sunset.
