I made Taos Tall Vase on the potter’s wheel from an iron bearing stoneware clay. I started the form as a somewhat ovate form with a shoulder. Next I throw the neck, throwing the line from the shoulder to the rim. Then I center the top on the base while it is moist. And step away from the pot. When it’s set, I smooth the two parts together on and off the wheel.
Once the vase is leather hard, I trim the bottom. When it’s dry, I bisque fire it and then prep it for glazing.
I call this glaze treatment “Taos” because it has the colors of Northern New Mexico – blue skies, green sage and pinon, creamy dreamy clouds, and golden light. With a pot this size, glazing can be challenging. I dipped the upper neck in a floating blue glaze that I make and then turned the vase on its side over a bowl and rolled the vase while pouring the glaze. Next, I dipped the bottom 1/4 in a copper green glaze that I make. Then I pour and trail cream across the seam where the two glazes meet. And lastly, I dip the top in a red gold glaze. I also trail the red gold and daub it here and there. These four glazes meld in the kiln to produce a dynamic and stunning surface.
Taos Tall Vase adds wow to any home. Cut your favorite crop of long stem flowers and let the vase gather them together. Contrasting reds or yellows or whites. Why not a mix of all? Set off a shelf, table top, or nook with this dramatic vase.
