Tempest Barrel Mug has a big teardrop shape with a strong, generous handle. Wrap your hands around the shape of this beauty and savor your favorite beverage, hot or cold.
I made Tempest Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel using an iron bearing stoneware clay, which fires out tan. A pulled handle has plenty of room for most hand sizes and added a thumb stop for extra comfort. The bottom is flat.
After the cups are bisqued and bottoms waxed to resist glaze, I dip half of the cup in a purple matter glaze that I make. I usually do this on a diagonal and then dip the other half in a floating blue glaze that I make. But I leave a gap. And over the gap I dip or pour a red gold glaze, which overlaps with the blue and purple as well. A daub of red gold here and there to create “clouds” and the rest is magic. What can I say? It’s a dynamic surface – bold in some areas and calm in others. Wow.

I fired these cups to 2200 degrees F, which makes them a strong stoneware ceramic. The handle won’t get hot in the microwave like those cheap, mass produced, slip cast cups! Stoneware heats evenly and help hold the heat longer. Hold it by the waist or by the handle! Once you’ve enjoyed a handmade stoneware mug you’ll never go back to commercially made mugs!
