Description
I made Black Rose Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable – not too thin not too thick. Flat bottom with a gentle curve and slightly flared rim.
After I fire the mug in the bisque kiln, I’m ready to treat the surface. First, I rub red iron oxide into the surface of the exterior of the mug, leaving the top portion bare. Then I line the cup with a black satin glaze and dip the top portion in the same glaze. Daring, yes. Noir, oh yeh. Let’s add some interest with some “roses” planted here and there across the surface and trail some glaze as well. The red iron oxide fires out deep, rich brown and makes a hearty contrast with the black.
Black Rose Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold. Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth. Well-balanced, sturdy, with a comfy handle.
Makes a great housewarming, birthday, holiday, or “thank you” gift.
All of my mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
