Description
I made Purple Rain Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay in the shape of perhaps an eggplant or tulip?; and trimmed a flat foot. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable and strong.
Purple Rain Barrel Mug is a well-balanced mug that sits flat and stable. And it keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold longer. Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth.
To create what I have been calling the “Purple Rain” glaze, I first dip the exterior of the mug in my purple matte glaze. I line the interior with red gold glaze and also dip the upper quarter of the mug in the same red gold. Lastly, I dip just the rim and maybe a 1/4″ down in my green glaze. This is very similar to my “Purple Sunset” glaze only the green creates a sheeting, or rain, when it melds in the kiln. I fire in my electric kiln to 2200 degrees F.
Makes a great gift for any occasion: Birthday, housewarming, holiday, or just to say “Thank You!”
All of my mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
