I made Taos 24 Travel Tumbler on the potter’s wheel using a toasty tan stoneware clay. It has a classic shape that fits in your drink console. Well-balanced in the hand and light-weight.
After the tumbler is trimmed and dry, I load it into the kiln and fire to about 1900 degrees. The bisque firing removes all the chemical water from the clay and converts it to a ceramic. Now for the fun part. First, I line the tumbler with a floating blue glaze that I make. Next I dip the cup about 2/3 of the way down in a floating blue glaze that I make. Then I dip the bottom 1/3 in a copper green glaze that I make. Once these glazes are dry, I trail or pour a cream rust glaze I make over the seam of the blue and the green. For the final touch, I dip just below the rim in a red gold glaze. And then it’s into the glaze kiln at 2200 degrees! And this glaze does move as it melds, creating a beautifully dynamic surface!
