Description
I made Purple Sunset Travel Tumbler on the potter’s wheel using a toasty tan stoneware clay. It has a classic straight shape that fits in your drink console. Well-balanced in the hand and light-weight.
After the tumbler is trimmed and dry, I load it into the kiln and fire to about 1900 degrees. The bisque firing removes all the chemical water from the clay and converts it to a ceramic. Now for the fun part. First, I line the tumbler with a floating blue glaze that I make. Next I dip the cup about 3/4 of the way up in a purple glaze that I make. Then I dip the top 1/4 in a red gold glaze. Once these glazes are dry, I dip just below the rim of the cup in a copper green glaze that I make. And then it’s into the glaze kiln at 2200 degrees!
The result is a satiny smooth tumbler that fits nice in your hand. The glaze reminds me of a southwestern sunset.
