I made Verde Travel Tumbler on the potter’s wheel using a toasty tan stoneware clay. It has a classic shape that fits in your drink console. Well-balanced in the hand and light-weight.
After the tumbler is trimmed and dry, I load it into the kiln and fire to about 1900 degrees. The bisque firing removes all the chemical water from the clay and converts it to a ceramic. Now for the fun part. First dip the tumbler on two opposite angles in a copper green glaze that I make. Then I dip over the empty spaces in a creme rust glaze that I make. I call this glaze combo “Verde”. And then it’s into the glaze kiln at 2200 degrees!
The result is a soft, tailored surface, with areas that remind me of cactus where the two glazes intersect.
