I made Taos Barrel Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. I pulled the handle directly from the body of the mug and added a thumb rest for extra comfort. The handle is comfortable, sturdy, and roomy. The mug has a trimmed foot that is sits flat and is stable.
To create the “Taos” surface, I start by dipping the cup in a floating blue glaze that I make. Then I dip the bottom portion in a copper green that I make. Next I trail cream glaze across the intersection of blue and green. Lastly, I dip the rim in a red gold which will sheet somewhat when it melds. All the elements of the Northern New Mexico colors come into play here, giving the surface the feeling of a landscape.
Taos Barrel Mug helps keeps your favorite beverage hot or cold. Liquid flows smoothly from the inside curve to your mouth. Durable, smooth to touch.
Makes a great gift for all occasions: Housewarming, birthday, holiday, “thank you”.
All of my mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
