I made Black Magic Mug on the potter’s wheel from an iron-bearing stoneware clay. The clay is a toasty tan color when fired to its maturity. The handle is hearty and comfortable and is pulled directly from the body of the mug. And I add a small bead of clay for a thumb rest.
I call this glaze combination “Black Magic” for the shimmering magical qualities of the overlapping glazes. After the cup is bisque fired, I wax the bottom to resist glaze and then I dip the cup in a black satin glaze. Next I dip the upper 1/4 of the cup in a red gold glaze. Then I dip the rim in a copper green glaze that I make. The sheeting of the green glaze over the red gold over the black makes magic!
Use Black Magic Mug for hot chocolate, tea, coffee, or any favorite beverage. Microwave without fear that the handle will get too hot. I fire to 2200 degrees which produces a strong and tight stoneware, which heats evenly. Toss out those slip cast, mass produced, cheap mugs! Once you’ve held a handmade pottery mug, you’ll never go back!
